Patchfile editor Cherry Picker is an OS X application that allows you to open MOTU's FreeMIDI patch list files and edit them with a drag and drop interface. You can arrange patches in categories of your own choice, rename them, and audition them simply by clicking on them.

You can assign midi files of your own choice as the files which will be played when you choose to audition them. Clicking on a patch name automatically assigns that sound in the external sound module or synthesizer, assuming that you have a functioning MIDI interface and that Cherry Picker has been correctly configured. CherryPicker is a 'donationware'.

Hello, Forgive me tagging along, but I would also like to know of the best way to manage and create patchlists for my synths with DP4.5. I have an original QuadraSynth and a QSR module (read: no profile exists.) and I have never been able to get them to be fully functional within DP. I tried the original Unisyn 1.5 back in OS9 and never really worked as advertised. Now with OSX, no idea of where to go/what to try. Very frustrating, indeed.

So, if anyone has any suggestions, I would also like to know them. Thanks you everyone (and to 'jv54strat' for the original question). Sayat Nova Posts: 5 Joined: Thu, 16 Dec 2004 8:36 pm. I've been a fan and user of Motu's products for a long while and find Unisyn to be very good. I'm using it with two MTP-AV midi interfaces networked to give me 16 mid channels. My biggest complaint/problem is the lack of profiles for some of my gear, namely the keyboard and master controller - a Kurzweil PC88mx. I'll be looking at whatever Roland profiles are installed as standard and maybe getting another keyboard that Unisyn can see.

Maybe there is a way to port profiles from other applications. I know Cherry Picker has its uses. But I wish Motu would be more on the ball with this one. Due to this lack of profiles in my specific situation, I would give Unisyn about a 7 out of 10 recommendation. Shooshie would probably give it more.

Hello SmilesLots, Thanks for the info. I think my main gripe is that it is fairly difficult to create profiles for whatever synth/module may not already be taken care of from MOTU. In my case, two of my expansion cards, as well as the fact that the QSR has two card banks that aren't seen in the general QS7/8/R profile that was created by MOTU.If Unisyn would help with that I'd get it in a heartbeat. Currently trying to contact MOTU to see if this is the case. Cheers, Sayat Nova Posts: 5 Joined: Thu, 16 Dec 2004 8:36 pm. Can't say much about the editor/librarians; I got Unisyn for OS9, but was never able to do much with it.

When I switched to OSX, never considered upgrading. On the Alesis QSR, I've been able to make the program changes work in DP4.x, as long as I leave the unit in Mix mode, User 00: Multitmbr1. I had to edit the middev file, adding the QSR, and edited the QS8.1 midnam file, saving it as QSR midnam. Did all this in BBEdit; it's not too hard if you're familiar with HTML or XML coding. (Of course, if you're not comfortable editing code, you're probably better off leaving it alone.) I was also able to find the patch lists for the various Q-cards (I think it was originally a Win file made for Cakewalk; I also have Metro), and can get the two cards installed in the unit to show up in the patch change list; trick is, when you change cards, you've got to also change the midnam file to match the cards installed. Bottom line: if you've got an older/less popular synth, you're probably going to have to do some hand coding to make them work. I'm not aware of any of the editor/librarians handling the middev/midnam stuff automatically.

There is Cherrypicker, but you still have to do most of the work, and I'm comfortable with BBEdit. Sayat: PM me if you want to try my files. Posts: 22 Joined: Tue, 26 Nov 2002 3:30 pm Location: Corpus Christi, TX.

I haven't tried Unisyn since the (very) old days. However, I have got both SoundDiver and MIDIQuest XL.

Your success will depend upon the gear. For instance, SoundDiver absolutely hates my K5000W, while MIDIQuest has no trouble with it (even though it doesn't have a profile specifically for that unit.the K5000S profile works just fine). SoundDiver also has trouble with both my Wavestation SR and my Alpha Juno 1, both of which are fine with MIDIQuest (as fine as the Wavestation can be, anyhow.problematic!). I can make all of them except the Juno work with SoundDiver, but it is a pain.

In SoundDiver's favor, the interface is nicer than that of MIDIQuest's, and it is seemingly stable. MIDIQUest is crashy on my system. In MIDIQuest's defense, it allows the editor to be used as a VSTi.very cool. Using M-Audio MIDISport 8 x 8 and 4 x 4, by the way. I had no problems with SoundDiver (3.0.5.2 on OS 9, and 3.1 beta 1 and 2 on OS X) and my Roland JV-1000. Using an Emagic AMT-8 MIDI interface I no longer have the JV, and it was the only one of my three hardware synths that had a SoundDiver module, so SoundDiver has fallen into disuse here, at least until I get fed up with plugins and go on an ebay shopping spree! My other two synths are: MOTIF Rack, which has its own patch and multi editors, and a stupid limitation of no patch editing in multi mode (which is probably why there are no third party editors for it, including SoundDiver), and Korg OASYS, which also has its own comprehensive and easy to use editor. But really, I think my next purchase is gonna be a true analog monosynth, maybe a Studio Electronics SE-1x or a MacBeth M3X. I want some knobs, screw an editor. But then again, I might go with an ION.

I have been playing around with the SoundDiver Beta 2 for OS X and with a demo of MidiQuest for the past few weeks. My current midi devices include: Emu Proteus 1XR, Alesis D4, Alesis S4 Plus, Roland GR-30 and Roland VG8 EX. The Midiquest demo works with everthing listed with the exception of the Roland VG-8 EX.

No profile available for it. SoundDver has proviles for everthing listed however, I cannot seem to get it to function with the Proteus 1 XR (looks like data is being transmitted but no data in sounddiver) or the Alesis D4 drum module (sysex data error). Has anyone had any success with these two modules in SoundDiver? I would like to stay with SoundDiver which seems to work nicely with the other devices. Plus, the price is right for a me being an owner of an emagic xskey. To re-ask a question from earlier in the thread: do any of the programs you folks have mentioned generate.middev and.midname files for use by Audio Midi Setup and the major sequencing & DAW programs? I must say, it ought to be standard operating procedure by now for manufacturers to provide these files (along with icons for AMS) for every piece of midi gear produced.

Rather frustrating not to be able to have new modules, synths, etc., available in AMS and ProTools right off, complete with all midi capabilities and patch lists. Is there a source for these files elsewhere online, by chance? Posts: 1 Joined: Wed, 06 Apr 2005 1:20 pm Location: South Orange, NJ. I'm trying to create the.middeve and.midnam files by editing/saving existing files with CherryPicker, but I'm having real difficulties (and totally failing so far). Side note: does anyone have these files for a Minimoog Voyager Anniversary Edition?

I have no idea what I'm doing, and the terminology, etc., is somewhat obtuse to someone not in the know. I would have thought that there would be a site somewhere where these files could be uploaded and shared with others, because it seems like there are a LOT of people recreating the wheel. It's rather frustrating. I think CherryPicker is the starting point for this - if we could hook the developer up with someone else willing to host/develop a site for sharing the files, we could be in business.
