RAM Disk for Windows SoftPerfect RAM Disk is a high-performance RAM disk application that lets you have a disk on your computer entirely stored in its memory. As the memory is much faster than physical hard disks, storing temporary data on a fast in-memory disk achieves a higher performance. Whatever your job is, read on to find out what a RAM disk can offer you. SoftPerfect RAM Disk creates a virtual disk residing in the computer RAM accessible in Windows Explorer and other applications, allowing you to store any temporary information on this disk. Furthermore, Windows can be configured to use the RAM disk for temporary files, so that the system and most applications would use the fast in-memory disk for their temporary data.

Free RAMdisk for Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, Server 2003 & 2008 (Gavotte) To use RAMdisk, the most important requirement is that the system has a lot of memory, much a lot than the size of RAMdisk that you intends to create. It works on system with minimum 256 MB RAM, where you’re recommended not to set RAMdisk with size more than 64 MB. SuperSpeed offers powerful solutions to systems engineers, system administrators and power users whose Microsoft® Windows systems are bottlenecked by disk I/O. 'Designed for Windows Vista & XP ', RamDisk and RamDisk Plus have been thoroughly tested to meet Microsoft standards for Windows 7, Vista and XP.

As Windows and other third-party applications often create a large number of temporary files for a short time only, using a RAM disk will extend your hard disk’s life by sparing it from excessive reading and writing. Modern computers are equipped with at least 4 GB of RAM, and most of the time there is a lot of unused memory that could be used as a high-performance alternative to the slower HDD storage. This product lets you create any number of virtual RAM disks limited only by the memory available.

You can also work with on-disk images and RAM disks associated with an on-disk file, that ensures your data is preserved between sessions. While regular users will benefit from moving web-browser caches and Windows temporary files to a RAM disk, IT professionals may find even more advantages.

Provided you have a sufficient amount of RAM, using a fast in-memory disk for temporary data will boost the computer performance. Reduced wear-and-tear of the physical disk.

Because temporarily files are not written to the hard disk, there will be fewer read/write cycles, which is especially important for prolonging the life of Solid State Drives (SSD) commonly installed in laptops. Less junk on the hard disk. Many software applications create temporary files that remain undeleted although no longer needed. The contents of RAM disks is cleared every time the computer is restarted or switched off, so the unneeded files won’t clutter your hard drive. Reduced file system fragmentation. Chimp according to wikipedia it was like 1.5 to 1.8 depending. I have personally experienced about 1.5 since it mentioned it. Never actually tried to go for minimal though. EDIT - Closer look, service packs are what do it so yeah upwards of 4+ if your on SP3. Id strip a SP2 install and be happy with it unless u need to be updated. Though the source they give doesnt agree with the 1.8GB extra they say for SP2 eitherway if you deleted the system restore files if its post install or just do it from a SP2 or SP3 disk it should be alot less space. Thank you for the replies.

Ramdisk Windows 10

I'm not so much trying to save hdd space as I am trying to find a use for the 8GB of RAM I have. Photoshop & Linux don't play well together and I need PS for work so I still need to keep Windows around. I'm thinking of opening an XP disc in nLite and stripping out nearly everything. I don't even need internet connection in this, nothing other than what runs the OS and font library. I'm using around 1GB of RAM as of now with no swap/pagefile so if an extra 3-5 GB is set aside for virtual XP, I wouldn't mind at all.
